USA Jigsaw Nationals in Atlanta

March 31st, 2026

Jigsaw Night had an incredible reception at its largest activation to date as part of the VR Villa at this weekend's USA Jigsaw Nationals, sponsored by Ravensburger and hosted by the USA Jigsaw Puzzle Association in Atlanta, Georgia.

Jigsaw Night is a multiplayer mixed reality jigsaw puzzle app for the Meta Quest platform that launched on stage at AWE 2025. Integrating hand tracking, co-location, mixed reality roomspace scanning, and Meta Avatars, it won an UploadVR award for "Best Hand Tracking Game of 2025."

"I met Jeff at AWE last year where he handed me a pair of chopsticks and explained the concept of the VR Villa," says Steve Lukas, founder and solo developer of the app.

"Jeff sets up a series of conferences with a nationwide staff to provide free VR demos to a variety of audiences.

When the opportunity came up to partner with Jeff on an activation, the USA Jigsaw Nationals couldn't have been a more perfect fit.

The concept of Jigsaw Night was to bring friends and family together, and at Nationals we saw even more ways that's being done by this community in the real world."

Discovering Competitive Puzzle Racing

That includes Speed Puzzling, a real-world competitive activity where participants race to complete puzzles in solo, pairs, or four-player team formats.

For Nationals, Ravensburger sponsored the event with 14 puzzles launched exclusively at the competition. Attendees immediately formed lines to purchase them, and many sold out.

While puzzle-related activities filled the event schedule, speed puzzling was unquestionably center stage.

"We've had the idea of adding a Puzzle Race mode to Jigsaw Night for several months, but knowing we were coming to Nationals gave us the opportunity to prototype what a competitive puzzle racing experience could look like and have it tested by people who actually do it for sport."

Lukas describes the prototype as follows:

"Each connected player gets a copy of the same puzzle box delivered at the same time. After a readiness countdown ends, the boxes open to the exact same pieces with identical shuffle layouts, along with racing meters tracking progress—features only available in digital form."

The mode immediately transformed what had traditionally been a cozy, collaborative activity into a competitive multiplayer experience.

"Having this road tested by professionals on their home turf gave us instant feedback, allowing us to iterate and create an observer mode so players could form up in teams."

A group of New York puzzlers became the first attendees to test the mode on the second day of the event, playing three rounds and asking what it would cost to recreate the setup at home.

Testing Mixed Reality Competition at Scale

Earlier that same day, the VR Villa hosted a tournament for the best pairs time to assemble a 64+ piece puzzle in the game. More than 10 teams of two participated, spending a combined six-plus hours in Mixed Reality competition.

The event also provided an opportunity to observe how Jigsaw Night resonated with audiences that are often underrepresented in XR.

In total, more than 220 players visited the VR Villa for a play session. Of those participants, over 70% were female and more than 120 were between the ages of 35 and 59.

Both figures stand out from the traditionally younger, male-skewing demographics often associated with VR engagement.

Reaching New Audiences Through XR

Reaching new audiences has long been part of Lukas's mission for Jigsaw Night.

"I spoke to this at AWE last year in my talk, 'Building a VR App for Everyone.’ Who is the most important market segment in XR? The people who don't care about it.

That is the largest target audience we can reach.

So we need to go where they are, see what they love and how they love it, then see if we can provide more ways for them to enjoy these things that only XR can deliver."

Expanding the Puzzle Ecosystem

The game currently includes 18 images that can be assembled as puzzles, but players also have ways to create experiences of their own.

Images can be imported through a Facebook integration and remain private to the owner, as well as anyone they choose to share them with for collaborative puzzle sessions.

The event also offered an early glimpse at the game's future puzzle marketplace.

Among the featured artists was Taylor Rose, who is well known within the jigsaw puzzle industry for her work on The Mystic Maze by The Magic Puzzle Company.

What's Next for Jigsaw Night?

What happens next?

Lukas says the experience at USA Jigsaw Nationals has already influenced how he's thinking about the game's roadmap.

"Before this weekend, my priority was returning to the design and development of the store page to support more artists, but after seeing the fever pitch of these competitions both in and out of headset, the Puzzle Race and leaderboards may take new priority."

The response to competitive puzzling has opened new possibilities for how Jigsaw Night could evolve alongside its existing social and collaborative gameplay.

Advice for Independent XR Developers

The current XR market remains challenging for studios of every size, particularly independent developers.

Lukas offers this advice:

"As a solo Unity developer, it's very easy to get lost in your own head, so get out there and get feedback.

Find your tribe of supporters that want you to succeed and who have valuable perspectives to offer.

I have to give a huge shout-out to Grace Park and Andy Fidel, both contributing design elements, iconography, product feedback, and field testing on a weekly basis since the end of 2025.

Additionally, Fabian Quosdorf was the first to see my initial prototype and encouraged it to go beyond a quick store push.

As my top partner when I worked in XR developer relations, his insights and technical advice helped drive the quality of this app.

The best players in XR are highly collaborative and want each other to succeed, so find them where you can."

Looking Ahead

As for Lukas, he's already taking inspiration from the community he met at Nationals. He recently ordered a batch of speed puzzles from sponsors of the USA Jigsaw Nationals competition and plans to start challenging himself to qualify.

"It's the best way to know how to iterate on the product, and this community has been an uplifting source of positive inspiration, especially in this day and age.

I'm grateful for the folks that put on this spectacular event and that they were welcoming enough to invite me in.

Who knows? Maybe we'll see some virtual reality speed puzzle heats in the near future."

Jigsaw Night is available now in Early Access on the Meta Quest platform.
